2015 Rice Owls football schedule
Rice running back Sam Stewart may be out for the second time this season. The redshirt freshman running back first spent time on the sideline for several weeks this season due to a concussion. On Monday, he was getting an MRI for an upper body injury. The results will be known later this week.
Rice’s game plan for UTEP included a heavy dose of Stewart. The Owls were trying to run more of their offense between Stewart, who moved from third to first on the depth chart, and fellow redshirt freshman Austin Walter. Walter would be used more from the slot to maximize the Owls’ speed. Stewart’s absence caused the Owls to switch up their offensive game plan against the Miners.
Rice redshirt senior defensive tackle Stuart Mouchantaf played against UTEP. Mouchantaf dislocated his left elbow in Week 5 against Western Kentucky. He returned to play in Week 9 against Louisiana Tech. Against the Miners, his elbow was still causing Mouchantaf significant pain. Redshirt freshman Preston Gordon and true freshman Carl Thompson shared playing time at defensive tackle.
